*PopMart Tour - 1997-98

post under construction...

The PopMart tour was to support the Pop album released in 1997. Initially the album was to be release at the end of 1996, but the band wanted more time to finish it, which delayed it's release. However, band management had already started booking venues for the tour, putting pressure on U2 to both complete the album and be sufficiently ready to perform the new songs on the upcoming tour.

Following on from ZOO TV, another elaborate stage set was designed that featured a 52m x 17m LED video screen, a massive 30m golden arch and even a 12m motorised mirror ball in the shape of a lemon that the band would descend from to play songs from the B stage. The kitsch stage set was designed to poke fun at consumerism and pop culture.

This tour would see U2 play it's first concerts in South America, South Africa, Greece, Israel, Mexico and of course the concert in Sarejevo as well as return to both Australia and Japan for their 3rd tours in succession. A total of 93 shows in all were performed on this tour over 4 legs which is makes it one of the smaller tours in terms of number of concerts the band has ever done.

Leg 1: North America 25 Apr 1997 > 2 Jul 1997 (29 shows - should have been 30 but a concert in Raleigh, North Carolina was cancelled due to the video screen being damaged in a wind storm. The concert was not rescheduled)
Leg 2: Europe 17 Jul > 30 September 1997 (30 shows)
Leg 3: North America 26 October 1997 > 12 Dec 1997 (17 shows including their first concerts in Mexico)
Leg 4: Rest of the World (South America) 27 Jan 1998 > 11 Feb 1998 (7 show across 3 countries)

Leg 5: Rest of the World (Oceania, Asia, Africa) 17 Feb 1998 > 21 Mar 1998 (8 shows across 3 countries)

There were 3 different official tour programs released for this tour, with the only real difference being the concert date listings.

Version 1: Lists all the concert dates for the first 3 legs of the tour (North America & Europe). Including the cancelled concert in Raleigh on 29 May 1997. Yet it doesn't list the concert in Greece. However it does list both New Zealand and Hawaii in a list of "Also Playing" locations.
Version 2: Again lists all the concert dates for the first 3 legs of the tour (North America & Europe), but this time it includes the Greece concert, excludes the cancelled Raleigh concert, lists and extra concert in both New York and Chicago and also excludes New Zealand and Hawaii from the "Also Playing" locations.

Version 3: Lists all the concerts from the Rest of the World legs of the tour. However, it doesn't list the 16 Mar concert in Cape Town
